My Approach

Hello, I’m Kate McKenna, a trauma informed and neuro-affirming qualified Integrative-Relational counsellor and registered member of the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP).

I work with Adults (18+) and older adults as individuals, couples and relationships online and in person.

As an integrative counsellor I believe your therapy should be as unique as you, we’ll combine a range of therapies to help you navigate, understand and move through your difficulties. I enjoy bringing creativity into sessions and we can use imagery, writing, metaphor, drawing and physical movement, alongside traditional talking therapy to help you move towards your goals.

Whether you require short-term or long-term counselling, our sessions can be either online or in person at Surrey Holistic, Godalming Surrey.

Issues

I specialise in working with relationship issues with individuals and couples, self-esteem, anxiety and neurodivergent parenting as well as pre and postnatal mental health and wellbeing.

I also have experience working with a wide range of issues including but not limited to depression, burnout, infidelity, conflict management, trauma and parenting challenges.

FAQs

What should I expect from individual counselling?

Counselling is a talking therapy where a trained professional helps you to explore your thoughts, feelings, and challenges in a safe space. I provide guidance, coping strategies, and emotional support to improve your mental well-being, relationships, and decision-making. The goal of counselling will be unique to you, examples might be personal growth, healing, or finding solutions to life's challenges. At times I might interrupt you to ask reflective or clarifying questions.

What should I expect from Online Counselling?

Online sessions are a convenient way of attending counselling. When we start working online, it can feel a little strange because we won’t be in the same room together. The benefit of this is that you can be in a place that you feel safest, maybe your living room with a nice hot cup of tea or over-looking your garden. Part of the work of our early sessions will be to build a strong trusting therapeutic relationship, as this will be the foundation for your personal growth and lasting change. During our online sessions I will provide you with a warm, safe and non-judgmental space for you to talk openly and freely while feeling heard, valued and understood.

What happens during our initial consultation call and after that?

When you first get in touch I’ll write to you to schedule an FREE 15-minute discovery call. During this we’ll talk about what you’re hoping I can help with and how we might go about doing this together. We’ll also discuss how we’ll meet and make sure that have the right skills, knowledge and services to help you move towards your goals. I can talk you through the counselling process and you can also ask me any questions or discuss any concerns you might have. We can then book your first session.

How do I pay for my sessions?

I ask that sessions be paid via bank transfer details will be provided within your counselling agreement. To reserve your session payment must be made in full 48 hours before we meet without payment sessions will be not be reserved.

What happens if I cannot attend our pre-booked session?

I provide counselling sessions on a weekly basis and I operate a 48 hour cancellation policy. If you cancel with less than 48 hours notice, the full session fee will be owed unless we can reschedule within the same week (Monday-Sunday).

Are our therapy sessions confidential and private?

Yes, everything we talk about will be confidential, there are a couple of limitations to this though for example if you inform me of a risk that we can't contain within our sessions we may need to reach out to other professionals to help us manage that risk. If you'd like more information about confidentiality feel free to get in touch to ask any questions.
