Neurodivergent Counselling vs. Neurotypical Counselling: Why the Difference Matters

Understanding the Challenges of Neurodivergence in a Neurotypical World

Our world has been designed around a certain set of rules and attributes and anyone who deviates from this skill set is viewed as having something wrong with them. I like to think that in 2026 we might be a little more aware of difference and diversity and why this system structure doesn’t work. But certain political leaders lead me to believe this may not entirely be the case, so I’m going to run through this quickly.

The Problem with 'Normal': How Society Fails Neurodivergent Individuals

The majority rules, this is the rule that most countries and law makers live by. They create rules, expectations and define “normal” by the largest demographic. The problem with this is that even the largest demographic may not be that large and they are almost always one of countless demographics that need to co-exist in the same system.

The Fish Out of Water: A Metaphor for Neurodivergence in an Unaccommodating World

Fish live in water and they thrive in their natural environment they can move quickly, access and make use of resources and are a functioning part of the ecosystem.

When you take a fish out of water, it cannot survive, it’s not designed to live outside of water. This doesn’t mean the fish is less of a fish because its on land. It just doesn’t have the resources or the biological structures to survive on land, which is why we create ways for them to do just that. We build in ponds, lakes and tanks we bring resources to them that they can no longer access independently.
We give a fish on land what it needs to thrive and survive on land by adjusting its environment to match its needs.

How Systems Designed for Neurotypicals Disempower Neurodivergent People

When we create a system around a rigid definition of “normal” we create an in hospitable environment for anyone who doesn’t meet that criteria. When we apply this to Neurodivergence we limit access to resources, independent survival and access to wellbeing resources leaving members of our society feeling like a fish out of water. Access to work is limited, stigma is created, access to suitable health care and self-care is restricted or unavailable. People are called disabled, when actually they’re being disempowered.

The Pitfalls of Traditional Counselling for Neurodivergent Clients?

Counselling for Neurotypicals without awareness of this difference in lived experience or equity in society can reinforce stigma, feelings of failure and shame while pressuring a neurodivergent person to learn to become Neurotypical. It might focus on:
- Teaching social skills reinforcing the need to mask.
- Blaming the individual for their struggles naming them lazy, anxious or self-centred.

  • Pressure clients into practicing self-soothing that makes their struggles worse.

What Is Neuro-Affirming Counselling? A Supportive Approach for Neurodivergent Individuals

As a neuro-affirming counsellor I don’t view you as a problem or broken in any way. I believe you’re functioning like a fish out of water and we need to find you the right size tank, with the right kind of water and make sure you have access to the resources that enable you to live and thrive in an environment that wasn’t designed around your neurology or biology.

I can sit beside you as you grieve the support and understanding you deserved, but didn’t receive. We’ll work together to understand what you need to help you communicate and advocate for yourself. I’ll hold space for you to test our lowering the mask with compassion and acceptance. Together we’ll build you up, not break you down or try to rebuild you.

Empowering Neurodivergent Individuals: The Future of Inclusive Counselling

Have you ever left traditional counselling as a neurodivergent person feeling invalidated or misunderstood? Counselling wasn’t originally designed with neurodivergence in mind and you might have left feeling like its another system that can’t support you.
